Rug Specifications

Materials
Foundation: Cotton
Foundation: Cotton icon

The foundation of a rug is the matrix of warp and weft threads that supports the pile. The exposed ends of the vertical warp threads form the fringe of the rug. Cotton is an excellent choice of material for the foundation of a rug. As well as being robust under tension, it is also inedible to moth, meaning that the underlying structure of your rug is protected from damage.

Pile: Wool
Pile: Wool icon

The pile of a rug is composed of rows of individual knots. The knots are tied to the foundation threads by hand, one at a time, until the pattern is completed. Wool offers a combination of durability, softness, stain resistance, insulation, and sustainability that has made it the go-to material for untold generations of rug makers.

Detail: Silk
Detail: Silk icon

The pile of this rug is composed of two materials. This allows certain details of the rug to stand out due to their different texture and/or reaction to light, and adds an extra dimension to the feel of the rug. Silk is renowned for its luxurious texture and elegant appearance, making it a coveted material for rugs. Silk fibers are exceptionally fine and soft, and have a natural luster that gives rugs a beautiful sheen

Persia.png
Origin: Indian

India has a vibrant and diverse rug-making industry that spans centuries. Known for its intricate designs, meticulous craftsmanship, and rich colors, Indian rugs are prized for their beauty and quality. Indian rug-making traditions draw inspiration from a blend of cultural influences, including Persian, Mughal, and indigenous Indian motifs. Indian rugs are often handcrafted using techniques passed down through generations, with artisans weaving each rug with care and precision. Over the years, many traditional Persian designs have been reinterpreted by Indian rug makers, but more recently it has become reknowned for its daring contemporary designs.

Hand-Knotted
handKnotted_edited.png

This rug was created using the traditional hand-knotting method. Hand-knotted rugs are crafted by skilled artisans who meticulously tie each knot by hand. This craftsmanship results in rugs of exceptional quality, durability, and longevity. Each hand-knotted rug is a unique work of art, with slight variations in design and color that add character and charm. This individuality cannot be replicated by machine-made rugs.

20 Raj.png
Knot-Count: 35 Raj/165KPSI

Knot-count refers to the density of knots in the rug. A good analogy is the number of pixels in a television screen - the higher the resolution, the higher the detail in the image. 35 Raj is a great knot-count for rugs with a medium amount of detail in the pattern.

Underlay

Underlay helps your rug in three main ways. Firstly, it stops it from moving (or "walking") on the floor, preventing accidents. It also protects the underside from rug-hungry  moths, which can often go unnoticed in the space between the floor and the rug. Lastly, it stops the rug from losing its shape. Underlay holds the knots together and prevents this from happening.

Choose the "Add Underlay" to have underlay delivered alongside your rug.

What Affects the Price of a Rug?

The main factors that affect the price of a rug are the density of knots (knot-count), the materials used, and the rarity of the piece.

Materials

While wool is fairly abundant in rug-making regions, materials like silk or cotton are harder to come by, so their inclusion increases the price of the rug. There are also varying qualities of wool, such as cork-wool, which is preserved for the finest pieces.

Knot-Count

A high knot-count increases the production time and therefore the cost, but allows for more detailed patterns. Rugs with a lower knot-count take less time to make and will generally feature less intricate patterns, but they are no less robust or attractive for it.

Rarity

While every hand-knotted rug is unique, some are particularly special or rare. This may be because of age, a prestigious signature, an unusual design, or some combination of the above. When a rug has such features, it makes it difficult or impossible to replace.

Taking Care of Your Rug

All of our rugs are durable enough to last for decades due to the manner of their construction. Indeed, if you take a look at our range of Antique rugs you will find pieces from the 1890s that were made in the same fashion and continue to look amazing!

There are a few simple things that you can do to keep your rug looking and feeling its finest, and ensure its longevity. Scroll through to see our recommendations

Vacuum Regularly

We recommend regular vacuuming to keep dust and other particles, and even moth eggs out of the foundation of the rug. This reduces friction in the pile, reducing the rate of wear and tear while simultaneously preventing wool-eating moth larvae from getting a foothold. For best results, it is also worth vacuuming the back of the rug and the surface it sits on every month or so.

Cleaning

cleaning service and get a quote

If something is spilled on your rug, the best thing to do is to absorb as much as possible with kitchen-paper or cloths, and then use a sponge to gently apply very dilute dish-soap in the direction of the pile (not scrubbing back-and-forth). If this does not work, don't panic and don't resort to stronger chemicals. Simply bring it to us within two weeks and we will clean it professionally. We also recommend doing this every 2-3 years depending on use.

Minor Repairs

cleaning service and get a quote

We recommend having minor damage (such as to the fringe or long-sides of the rug) addressed as soon as possible. A small tear or frayed fringe is relatively simple for us to fix, but over time can deteriorate into a much more complex job.

Rotation

If one area of your rug gets more traffic or sunlight, you might consider rotating it every few months. This will stop these areas from becoming disproportionately worn and allow your rug to age and mature evenly.

What not to do

We do not recommend using Scotchgard or similar products. While they may provide protection in the short-term, over time the chemicals will harden into dark, unattractive clumps that are difficult to remove even with professional cleaning. We also strongly advise against "surface-cleaning" which, unlike our professional cleaning service will not remove dust and other residues from the foundation of the rug. Instead, this will only moisten it and cause it to cake to the foundation and increase friction between the fibres, shortening your rugs lifespan.
