Red

Red is perhaps the most common colour found in traditional rugs. The main reason for the ubiquitous use of the colour is due to the ease with which rug weavers could access the natural red dyes. The roots of the madder plant were often used to create red dye, but various other plants and even insects have been used. Nowadays red dyes are produced synthetically and are being used more frequently due to the high levels in which they can be produced, however, many traditionalists still prefer to use natural dyes as much as possible.
